Zed shipped two releases on November 4 — stable 1.27 and preview 1.28. Together they tell a clear story: the team is fixing the ACP friction that was making external agent connections brittle, while continuing to trim the editor’s footprint. If you tried wiring up Claude Code or Gemini CLI to Zed and hit a crash or a blown context window, these releases address exactly that.
ACP Fixes: The Bugs That Were Actually Biting People
The most consequential changes land in the Agent Client Protocol (ACP) layer, Zed’s open standard for connecting any coding agent to any editor. Two bugs stood out.
First, agents returning null for an empty response payload caused Zed to throw an error and break the session. That is now handled gracefully in 1.27. Second, the read_file tool — the mechanism agents use to inspect source files — would pass entire lines to the LLM without length limits. On generated files or minified code, a single line could be thousands of characters, burning through context budget on whitespace. Version 1.28 caps line length at 2,000 characters in read_file output.
The 1.28 preview also improves protocol compatibility with the latest ACP schema: missing sessions are handled, permission cancellation works correctly, and plan updates and diff formats align with the current spec. These are the edge conditions developers hit within the first hour of connecting a real agent to a real project.
External agents using ACP also gain session notices and context compaction in 1.28. When a conversation hits 90% of the available context window, Zed summarizes earlier messages and continues. A “Context Compacted” marker shows where the rollup happened. This was available to Zed’s native agent in earlier releases; it now extends to any ACP-connected external agent.
Smaller Binaries, Less Agent Panel Overhead
Zed 1.27 cuts binary sizes: about 33% on macOS, 28% on Windows, and 7% on Linux. The reductions come from optimization of workspace crates for size, hiding Rust exports in macOS bundles, safe identical-code folding, and stripping unneeded Linux symbols.
Beyond install size, 1.27 also reduces memory and CPU usage in the Agent Panel during long sessions. Startup performance improves when restoring large sets of editor selections, and multi-cursor editing gets a performance pass. These address the complaint that Zed’s reputation for speed felt conditional on not running the AI features.
Git Workflow Upgrades (1.28 Preview)
The 1.28 preview introduces optional automatic Git fetching, keeping your remote branch status current without a manual git fetch. The Git Graph gains a resizable Refs column, and you can now drag files directly from the Git Panel into terminals and editors — eliminating the copy-paste loop for file paths.
Mouse-wheel font zoom arrives in diff views and terminals. On macOS it is cmd-scroll; on Linux and Windows, ctrl-scroll with the mouse_wheel_zoom option enabled.
Style-Aware AI Commit Messages
A detail worth noting in 1.27: Zed’s AI-generated commit messages now read the three most recent commits in your repository and match their style. If your team uses conventional commits (fix: resolve null pointer in auth handler), Zed will produce messages in that format. This is the kind of small, specific feature that separates a tool built by people who actually use it.

Getting the Update
Zed’s auto-updater handles stable releases. To get 1.27 now, open Zed and check for updates, or download from zed.dev/download. For the 1.28 preview, switch to the preview channel in settings or visit zed.dev/download/preview.
The State of Zed in November 2026
Zed’s ACP strategy is becoming clearer with each release cycle. Rather than building a walled garden around a single AI provider, the team is investing in the protocol layer — fixing the bugs that make external agents unreliable, adding features like context compaction that any agent can use, and keeping the editor itself fast and lean. The Stack Overflow 2026 Developer Survey put Zed at 11.4% adoption (up from 7.3% last year), with a 57% admiration score that beats both Cursor and VS Code. The gap from 1.25 to 1.27 represents meaningful protocol maturation — these releases are the evidence.
