Nextcloud turned 10 on June 9, 2026 — and used the occasion to ship its most ambitious release. Hub 26 Spring (Nextcloud 34) lands with Euro-Office 1.0 bundled in, an AI Assistant that works across every app and your phone, and a new developer program to grow the ecosystem. For anyone waiting on a credible, self-hosted Microsoft 365 replacement, the wait just got shorter.
Euro-Office 1.0: Four Apps, One Sovereignty Debate
The headline feature is Euro-Office — a browser-based office suite built by a European tech industry alliance, now shipping as part of Hub 26 Spring. You get four applications: document editor, spreadsheet, presentation tool, and PDF editor, all with real-time collaborative editing. Format support covers DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and the ODF equivalents, which means you can open files emailed from any Microsoft or Google user without conversion drama.
The technical implementation matters here. Euro-Office uses a clean-room OOXML implementation rather than Microsoft’s reference code — full OOXML fidelity is a work in progress, and documents with complex macros or advanced formatting will show a warning if they can’t render faithfully. Version 1.0 also skips desktop and mobile clients; those are next on the roadmap. This is a real v1.0: functional and usable, but not feature-complete.
There is already a controversy. The Document Foundation — the organization behind LibreOffice — published an open letter the day before launch, calling Euro-Office “a de facto ally of Microsoft in its content lock-in strategy.” Their argument: making OOXML the default format shifts where your data lives but leaves format control with Microsoft. That is a legitimate critique. The counter is equally legitimate: ODF-only tools have failed to reach mainstream adoption for 20 years. OOXML compatibility is a practical prerequisite for organizations actually migrating from Microsoft 365. Whether Euro-Office can close the gap without conceding on format sovereignty will define the next few releases.
Nextcloud users now have a choice: Euro-Office or Collabora Online. Both remain supported.
AI Assistant: Across Every App, Including Your Phone
The Nextcloud Assistant has expanded steadily across releases, and Hub 26 Spring makes it genuinely cross-platform. The biggest additions in this release:
- Document sidebar chat: open a document and the Assistant appears alongside it — no tab switching
- Context Agent: the AI searches across files, emails, tasks, Deck boards, and Forms to answer queries
- New agent actions: create cards in Deck, update fields in Forms — two concrete task-completion abilities added
- Mobile: iOS and Android support, with system-level context menu integration (highlight any text, ask the AI to work with it)
The design principle has not changed: all AI in Nextcloud is optional, configurable, and runs against your own models on your own infrastructure. There is no mandatory cloud call-out. That remains the core differentiator versus Microsoft 365 Copilot, which is cloud-only and priced at $30 per user per month on top of existing subscriptions.
New ISV Developer Program
Buried in the announcement but relevant for developers: Nextcloud launched a formal ISV (Independent Software Vendors) program with Hub 26 Spring. Two Developer Relations Managers were hired specifically to support external developers. The program promises more stable APIs, revised documentation, and improved app marketplace tooling. If you have been building Nextcloud apps or evaluating whether to start, this is the clearest signal yet that the platform is investing in its developer ecosystem.
Governance, Talk, and the 10-Year Context
Enterprise customers get a new Governance app with sensitivity labels, data retention, legal holds, and a compliance scoring dashboard — the tooling regulated industries need before they can move off Microsoft 365. Nextcloud Talk gains improved AI noise suppression, live transcription with translation, and hardware-accelerated background blur. These are table-stakes features for video software in 2026, and Nextcloud now checks them.
The 10th anniversary framing matters for evaluating the release. Nextcloud reported 75 percent revenue growth and a tenfold userbase increase in 2025. Hub 26 Spring is not a scrappy upstart project — it is a mature platform with migration tooling for Google Workspace, Dropbox, OneDrive, and ownCloud, and now a complete office suite to go with it.
