Garmin Connect API Is Back: Free Personal Tier Added

Garmin Connect API reopens with free personal tier for individual developers

After seven months of silence — no new approvals, no timeline, nothing beyond “we’re redesigning it” — Garmin has reopened its Connect Developer Program. The revamped program introduces three access tiers, and for the first time ever, individual developers can generate a personal API key to their own Garmin data in minutes with no application, no approval, and no waiting.

The Personal Tier: Free and Instant

This is the part that matters most for individual developers. The new Personal tier is free, self-serve, and instant. There is no gatekeeping process — log in to Garmin Connect Web, navigate to the Personal API Key page, click Create Key, accept the terms, choose an expiration period (30, 90, 180 days, or one year), and copy your key. That key is shown once, so save it somewhere safe.

What you get access to:

  • Activity data — JSON summaries and raw .FIT files for every workout
  • Health data — daily summaries including sleep stages, HRV, Body Battery, stress score, and pulse oximetry
  • Women’s health data — menstrual cycle and related metrics

Access tokens are valid for 24 hours and the personal tier is pull-only: your code requests the data, nothing gets pushed to you automatically after a workout syncs. There is also no write-back — you cannot send workouts or routes from the API to your watch on a personal key.

What Garmin Withholds

Here is where the personal tier gets frustrating. Garmin strips certain fields from the FIT files it delivers through the API. Missing from API-delivered files: VO2 max, recovery time, performance condition, training effect, and sweat loss. These metrics are still present in the FIT files you download manually from Garmin Connect — Garmin is choosing to withhold them from API access, not because the data is unavailable, but as a deliberate product decision. Presumably, keeping premium fitness insights inside Garmin’s own ecosystem is the rationale.

If you need VO2 max and recovery time in your application, the personal tier will not give them to you. That data sits in the Starter and Enterprise tiers, on commercial or approved terms.

Why Garmin Closed in the First Place

The closure in March 2026 was tied to two converging pressures. First, demand had exploded — Garmin went from a handful of API applications per week to a daily flood of AI-generated applications from developers building vibe-coded fitness tools. The team could not keep up. Second, a 2025 Strava lawsuit over API terms (Garmin had required its logo on every activity screen, post, and data visualization) created legal complexity that pushed Garmin toward a full program redesign rather than incremental fixes.

The seven-month gap forced developers who needed Garmin data to rely on unofficial reverse-engineered libraries or third-party aggregators with their own approval workflows.

Starter and Enterprise Tiers

For teams building applications for other users, the two business tiers handle that use case.

Starter is free for up to 1,000 users and adds push-based delivery via webhooks, plus the Courses API and Training API — which means you can receive structured workouts from users and push routes to their devices. Historical data and higher user limits are not included. An application and approval are required.

Enterprise adds everything in Starter plus the Golf API, unlimited users, historical data going back at least one month, a choice of push or pull delivery, and dedicated technical support. Pricing is negotiated case by case.

What This Means for AI Fitness Tools

The personal tier’s real significance may be in AI tooling. During the closure, developers building AI fitness coaches were forced into unofficial workarounds — the Fitness AI Connector MCP server (60,000+ users) connected Garmin data to Claude and ChatGPT using Garmin’s official Health API, but developers could not get official credentials while the program was closed.

Now the path is clear: generate a personal API key, pull activity and health data, pass it to an AI model for coaching insights, training load analysis, or injury correlation. Third-party integrations that previously had to route through aggregators can now go direct with official credentials.

What you still cannot do through any official API: write structured workouts back to the watch, or access the proprietary fitness intelligence metrics — VO2 max, performance condition — that Garmin uses as a competitive moat.

How to Get Started
