Claude API 2026-10-21: Breaking Changes Devs Must Fix Now

Code editor showing Claude API version 2026-10-21 migration with HTTP 400 error highlighting and Python code examples

If you upgraded the Anthropic SDK in the last two weeks without pinning versions, your Claude integration may already be returning HTTP 400 errors. API version 2026-10-21 went live on October 21 — Anthropic’s first versioning change since 2023 — and the new SDK majors (Python 2.0, TypeScript 1.0) default to it automatically. Three parameters are gone, one header has changed, and two more breaking changes land on November 30. Here is what to fix and when.

What Triggered This

API version 2026-10-21 is the first new anthropic-version header value since 2023-06-01 — a three-year gap. Anthropic packaged it into new SDK majors: Python 2.0.0 and TypeScript 1.0.0, both released the same day. Anyone running a bare pip install --upgrade anthropic or npm update @anthropic-ai/sdk is now on the new version by default, and it rejects things the old version accepted silently. The official migration guide lists every change with the full diff.

Fix This First: Remove temperature, top_p, and top_k

These three parameters are gone. Send any of them — even at their default values — and the API returns a hard HTTP 400. The change applies to the Messages API, token counting, and Message Batch requests. There is no replacement parameter; you simply remove them.

# Before — breaks on SDK 2.0 / API 2026-10-21
response = client.messages.create(
    model="claude-opus-5-5",
    max_tokens=1024,
    temperature=0,   # 400 error
    top_p=0.9,       # 400 error
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Classify this text"}]
)

# After — remove the parameters entirely
response = client.messages.create(
    model="claude-opus-5-5",
    max_tokens=1024,
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Classify this text"}]
)

If you were using temperature=0 for determinism, note that it never actually guaranteed identical outputs — Anthropic’s own documentation stated this. The fix for predictable formatting is structured prompting: explicit instructions covering format, voice, and constraints. For classification tasks, use tool_use with a fixed JSON schema to enforce output structure. This is not just Anthropic, either. OpenAI already removed temperature on o1, o3, and GPT-5. Google has been warning against adjusting it on Gemini 3. Temperature as an API parameter is ending across frontier models.

Python SDK: MessageParam Is No Longer a Constructor

In anthropic 2.0.0, MessageParam changed from a TypedDict to a Union type alias. Calling it like a constructor raises a TypeError at runtime. The inspect_ai eval framework tracked 285 broken tests from this single change the day the SDK dropped.

from anthropic.types import MessageParam

# Before — breaks in anthropic 2.0.0
msg = MessageParam(role="user", content="Hello")  # TypeError

# After — use a plain dict
msg: MessageParam = {"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}

Search your codebase for MessageParam( and replace every call with a dict literal. The type annotation still works fine for static analysis — it just cannot be instantiated directly anymore.

Proxies and Gateways: The Bearer Header Swap

SDK 2.x sends your API key as Authorization: Bearer instead of X-Api-Key. The Claude API itself accepts both, so direct calls continue to work. But reverse proxies, AI gateways, and middleware that reads or forwards X-Api-Key will stop seeing the key. Multiple open-source AI gateways filed issues within 24 hours of the SDK 2.0 release. If you run a proxy layer in front of Claude — common in enterprise deployments — verify it forwards the Authorization header and not just X-Api-Key.

On AWS Bedrock, API version 2026-10-21 works only with Claude 4.7 and later models. The Bedrock migration walkthrough by Hidekazu Konishi covers the request changes and header handling in detail. The official sample connector has been updated to accept both headers, but custom connectors will need manual updates.

November 30: Two More Things Break

While you are auditing integrations, check for these before end of month.

Claude Sonnet 4.5 retires. The model ID claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929 stops accepting requests on November 30. If you hardcoded that string in config files, environment variables, or agent definitions, those calls will fail hard. The model deprecations page has the full list. Migrate to claude-sonnet-5-5.

Opus 4.8 fast mode is deprecated. Passing speed: "fast" to claude-opus-4-8 returns an error after November 30. Migrate to claude-opus-5-5, which includes fast mode natively.

The Checklist

  • Grep for temperature, top_p, top_k in Anthropic API calls — remove them all
  • Search for MessageParam( in Python code — replace with dict literals
  • Audit proxy and gateway layers for X-Api-Key handling — add Authorization: Bearer support
  • Search for claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929 — update to claude-sonnet-5-5 before Nov 30
  • Search for speed: "fast" on claude-opus-4-8 — migrate to claude-opus-5-5 before Nov 30
  • If you use the CLI, ant completions create is gone — switch to the Messages API

Pin your SDK versions in production. Running unpinned against an SDK that can ship a major version at any time is how you get 400 errors at 2 AM. The full migration guide is at platform.claude.com/docs/en/api/migration-2026-10-21.
