Runway shipped plugins for Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor on November 2. One command installs the Runway Dev MCP in your coding agent, and from that moment it can generate video, create images, and wire up audio workflows directly into your app — without you touching the integration code yourself.
This is not a wrapper around Runway’s consumer product. Runway Dev is the API-first platform for developers: it gives programmatic access to Gen-4.5, Kling 4.0, Seedance 2.0, and several other models through a single billing account. The plugin connects your agent to that API and hands it the skills to build with it.
Install It Now
The commands are short:
# Claude Code
/plugin install runway-api@claude-plugins-official
# Codex
codex plugin marketplace add runwayml/skills
codex plugin add runway-api@runway-dev
# Cursor
/add-plugin runway-api
Each installs the Runway API MCP server and links it to your Runway Dev account. The agent immediately reads your credit balance, model pricing, and account limits — it has everything it needs to work within your budget before it touches anything.
What the Agent Can Actually Build
Once the plugin is active, your agent gets four tools:
- runway_generateVideo — creates video from an image and text prompt
- runway_generateImage — generates images from text, with optional reference images
- runway_upscaleVideo — boosts resolution on existing clips
- runway_editVideo — edits video using a prompt and reference images
Model selection happens automatically through Runway’s Media Router. The defaults are Seedance 2.0 for video generation, Nano Banana Pro for images, and Aleph 2.0 for video editing — the agent picks the right one for the task without you specifying it.
Tell your agent “add a product video generation endpoint that takes a product image and returns a 5-second clip” and it builds the full integration: API calls, polling logic, error handling, and storage. That used to take an afternoon of reading docs. Now it’s a prompt.
What It Costs
Runway Dev is pay-as-you-go. Gen-4.5 runs at $0.12 per second — a 5-second clip costs about $0.60. Seedance 2.0, the cheaper path, starts at $0.067 per second. Kling 4.0 is $0.157 per second at 720p. For anything beyond testing, the costs add up fast, so the agent reading your credit balance before generating is not a minor feature.
You need a Runway Dev account with billing configured before the plugin does anything useful. There is no free tier.
The Bigger Pattern
Runway is not alone here. The MCP Registry passed 10,000 servers in September 2026, up 5x in nine months. Cloudflare, Vercel, Sentry, Linear, and now Runway have all shipped agent-native integrations in the last few months. The pattern is consistent: APIs that required reading documentation, writing auth boilerplate, and handling polling loops are becoming one-command installs in the tools developers already use.
Runway’s specific bet is that generative media features — product videos, image variations, localized ad content — are moving from “specialist team” territory into “coding agent task” territory. If that is true, being present in the editor when a developer says “add video to this” is worth more than any amount of marketing.
If you build anything involving media generation, this plugin belongs in your stack. Install it, link your Runway Dev account, and the next time you need to add video features, describe what you want and let the agent handle the rest.
