Runway GWM-1 Powers Robotics, Avatars & 3D Worlds

Runway launched GWM-1 on December 11, 2025 – their first general world model that shifts from video generation to interactive world simulation. Three variants target distinct use cases: GWM-Worlds creates explorable 3D environments in real-time, GWM-Avatars generates realistic conversational characters with facial expressions and lip-syncing, and GWM-Robotics produces synthetic training data for robots. All three run at 24fps/720p with physics, geometry, and lighting understanding.

From Video Clips to Interactive Simulations

GWM-1 is an autoregressive model built on top of Runway’s Gen-4.5, which currently holds the #1 spot on the Video Arena leaderboard. But GWM-1 isn’t about generating video clips. It generates frame by frame with interactive controls for camera pose, robot commands, and audio input. The result: world simulation that understands how physics actually works, not just surface-level pixel generation.

This matters because static video generation has a ceiling. You can make increasingly realistic clips, but you can’t explore them, change parameters mid-stream, or use them to train robots. GWM-1 breaks that ceiling.

GWM-Worlds: Infinite Explorable Spaces

GWM-Worlds generates immersive, infinite environments as you move through them. Set a scene through a prompt or image reference, then explore – the model creates the world with geometry, lighting, and physics understanding at 24fps/720p. It’s not pre-rendered. It’s not a fixed video. It’s real-time world generation.

Use cases: gaming environments, agent training grounds, or any scenario requiring explorable 3D spaces. The “infinite” part is key – traditional approaches require massive pre-built assets. GWM-Worlds generates them on demand.

GWM-Avatars: Conversational Characters That Don’t Look Dead Inside

GWM-Avatars is an audio-driven model that creates realistic human motion and expression for both photorealistic and stylized characters. It handles facial expressions, eye movements, lip-syncing, and gestures during extended conversations – not just 5-second clips.

This targets the virtual assistant and digital human market, where most avatars still have that uncanny valley stiffness. GWM-Avatars supports arbitrary characters (you’re not locked into a pre-built face) and responds to audio input, making it interactive rather than scripted.

Customer service bots, training simulations, and virtual representatives get more realistic. Whether that’s good or dystopian depends on your perspective.

GWM-Robotics: Train Robots Without Breaking Hardware

GWM-Robotics solves a bottleneck in robotics: physical hardware limits how fast you can train and test policies. Runway’s SDK lets you generate synthetic training data at scale, then test policies directly within the world model instead of deploying to physical robots.

Change the parameters – weather, obstacles, scenarios – and see how policies perform without risking real hardware. The model supports counterfactual generation, meaning you can explore “what if” alternative trajectories. This is faster, more reproducible, and safer than real-world testing.

David Beats Goliath (Again)

Runway’s Gen-4.5 already beat Google’s Veo 3 and OpenAI’s Sora 2 Pro on the Video Arena leaderboard – blind A/B testing where human raters don’t know which model created the outputs. Gen-4.5 scored an Elo rating of 1,247, pushing Google to #2 and OpenAI to #7.

Runway CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela told CNBC: “We managed to out-compete trillion-dollar companies with a team of 100 people.” The model was internally codenamed “David” – a direct reference to the David vs. Goliath story.

Now Runway claims GWM-1 is more “general” than Google’s Genie-3, which focuses mainly on generating simulated data. GWM-1’s three variants (Worlds, Avatars, Robotics) show a broader approach: not just one use case, but a platform for multiple domains.

Part of the 2025 World Model Race

Runway isn’t alone in pursuing world models. Google DeepMind is developing them for robotics and realistic video. OpenAI sees better video models as a pathway toward world models. NVIDIA announced Cosmos at CES 2025, a platform for teaching machines how the physical world works. Mistral released a small model for robotics, devices, and drones.
