On December 1, 2025, at NeurIPS, NVIDIA released Alpamayo-R1—the world’s first industry-scale open reasoning model that lets autonomous vehicles think out loud. This isn’t just another AI model dump. It’s a 1,727-hour dataset spanning 25 countries and a complete toolkit that challenges the proprietary status quo.
Chain-of-Thought Reasoning Makes Autonomous Driving Explainable
Traditional autonomous driving AI is a black box: cameras in, steering decisions out. You trust it works, but you can’t see why. Alpamayo-R1 changes that with chain-of-thought reasoning—the same technique that makes modern language models explain their thinking step-by-step.

VLA Models Are Reshaping Physical AI
Alpamayo-R1 is a vision-language-action (VLA) model, a category that unifies three capabilities: vision through cameras and sensors, language for reasoning, and action for vehicle control. This is bigger than autonomous driving.
Google DeepMind launched the first VLA model, RT-2, in July 2023 for robotics. Now Goldman Sachs projects VLA models will capture 60% of the Level 4 autonomous driving market by 2030. The shift from modular systems to end-to-end learning means VLA models can handle edge cases by drawing on broad world knowledge learned from web images and text—not just driving data.

At NeurIPS, NVIDIA unveiled a suite of open-source physical AI tools: MultiTalker Parakeet for multi-speaker speech recognition, NeMo Gym for reinforcement learning in LLM training, NeMo Data Designer for synthetic dataset generation (now open-source under Apache 2.0), and Nemotron Content Safety Reasoning for dynamic policy enforcement.
NVIDIA presented over 70 papers at NeurIPS spanning AI reasoning, medical research, and autonomous vehicles. This is a coordinated bet on “physical AI”—models that don’t just generate text or images, but control robots, vehicles, and industrial systems. The autonomous driving model is the flagship, but the entire stack is open for developers working on physical AI applications.
